Can we outrun the consequences?
Probably the only reasonable way of solving the future problem is buying a hybrid before we're made to. The choice of hybrid cars in Ireland is quite wide. REVAi AEV (automatic electric vehicle) is now available in Ireland. It's a 'Smart' of the new generation. Even before the oil crisis comes to Ireland you can economize paying just only 1 cent per km. If you don't fancy the idea of driving such a small vehicle your expenses will rise.
Fortunately, there already exists second hand cars market and Toyota has launched an all-new Toyota Certified Used Hybrid (TCUH) program, an extension of the Toyota Certified Used Vehicles (TCUV) brand which provides added inspection and warranty coverage on certified used cars (hybrids). Trying to make hybrids cheaper Honda used new, more cost-efficient production methods of hybrid technology to produce Insight. The 2010 Insight defines a new stage in the evolution of hybrid technology that makes the car more affordable. And for those who want to buy something really extraordinary Fisker Automotive has created Karma. Karma can zip to 100km/h in around six seconds and top 200km/h. Its power output is a whopping 408hp and it's beautiful.
What goes around, that comes around.
But only if its charged. If Irish cars are not dependent on oil supplies they'll be dependent on electricity. Anyway, we all have to be charged for using (and to use) cars in Ireland. The maximum of electric mode of your hybrid will make it go 80km. Still, electricity seems more reliable power source for the future of cars. As the statistics say the use of renewable sources for electricity production is increasing and is set to continue to increase. There seems to be a hope for cars in Ireland in Sustainable Energy Ireland Renewable Energy Research, Development and Demonstration (RE RDD) programme which is focused on stimulating technologies that have potential for the future and technologies which are close to market.
